A modern mountain retreat located in Japan on the island of Hokkaido near the base of Annupuri Ski Resort. Facilitated with a wonderful team comprised of an experienced Japanese architect, an attentive project manager located in Hokkaido, master builders and craftsmen on site, and patient and decisive clients.
This incredible custom built home is featured in the Modern in Denver Winter 2024 issue. Dialect worked with the client to provide full design services from finish and lighting selections, to custom features including a sunken living room built-in and a finely detailed live edge + concrete + steel dining table, through final styling.

Our inspiration for this project was an Andrew Jensdotter painting. He creates gorgeous multi-layered paintings where he strategically carves away the layers to expose color and reveal entirely new images. Similarly, we wanted to create something new by adding the layer of a modern addition to this historic home, then reveal a new side of the historic parts. We were also inspired by the homeowners' bibliophilia.
Books add so much life and color to a space. We made a home for every book and reserved room to expand their collection. An entire wall in the living room and piano room was devoted to built-ins with shallower areas for paperbacks. The kitchen includes a nook under the island for cookbooks. The master nightstands were selected to be wide enough for lamps and a stack of reading material. In the sitting room, the glass coffee table allows for displaying an impressive collection of art books on rotation.
